Curator’s Statement
Curating a set of artworks generally involves thinking ahead to how they will live and converse together in a physical space. How big is this painting related to that one? How will these colors reflect onto the floor sculpture over there? What about the blueish tone from the color temperature of the lights? Selecting works for a printed collection offers an opportunity to throw all these constraints out the window and pick purely based on that exciting tingle of emotion you get when a work strikes you like a discovered treasure. It’s with an embrace of this freedom that I’ve approached the curation of artworks to include in this issue of Maake. Though varied in their media and nature, all the works in this issue have in one way or another gotten my heart going.
