Tiger Strikes Asteroid
Interview with Alex Paik
Questions by Emily Burns
What is Tiger Strikes Asteroid?
Tiger Strikes Asteroid is a network of artist-run spaces with locations in Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Each space is independently operated and focuses on presenting a varied program of emerging and mid-career artists. Our goal is to collectively bring people together, expand connections and build community through artist-initiated exhibitions, projects, and curatorial opportunities. We seek to further empower the artist’s role beyond that of studio practitioner to include the roles of curator, critic, and community developer; and to act as an alternate model to the conventions of the current commercial art market.
What are some cool projects or artist opportunities that are unique to TSA?
TSA NY has an annual flat file that is open to any professional artist.
TSA Philadelphia has an open call for a three person show right now.
Can you talk about the importance of artist-run projects today?
As more emerging and mid-tier galleries close or embrace the “fairs only, no physical space” model there are fewer opportunites for emerging artists to show their work. These spaces, run by artists who sacrifice their studio time and finances in order to provide opportunities for other artists and to create communities, are integral to broadening the critical dialog in the art world. Their work is vital, and becoming more so every day as artists are being called upon more and more to create their own discourse.
Any upcoming cool stuff to look out for?
We recently became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization! Look for our programming to expand and become more ambitious over the next few years!
